The Fight for Peace

Pastor Pastor's Thought

One hundred years ago today marks the end of World War One , which to this point had the highest level of casualties in the history of the world. Millions of people died as a result of the sophisticated enhancement of military warfare in pursuit of peace.  Humankind has always found it necessary to engage in warfare, for whatever reason.

World War One was called the war to end all wars.  Whilst this was the desired outcome, this outcome was not achieved.  At the outbreak of war in 1914, the British army had 700,00 men, in opposed to Germany’s 3.7m.  However, the British army campaigned over 250,000 young men under the  age of 19, with the youngest being 12, which include a George Maher, who was only Thirteen, when he was sent Somme.

Fortunately for Maher, he survived the war, as he and five other underage boys were returned to England for fighting.

This point highlights the desire of a generation who felt compelled with the need to defend King and Country. This is something that the British army was proud of and demonstrated their commitment of those in pursuit of liberty are willing to give their lives.

The Roman General Publius, Flavius, Vegetius, in his book Epitoma Rei Militaris, wrote “ if you want peace prepare for war”

Jesus, while here on earth, said, ‘ Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let it be afraid ‘.  John 14:27.

We live in a world, that is constantly battling for peace, fighting for harmony and contending for concord.  However, real peace can only be found in and through Jesus Christ.

This week, as we remember those who have engaged in combat or artillery exchange, as well as those who have laid down their lives for King/Queen and country, may we pray for our armed forces and those with PTSD – post traumatic stress disorder as a result of war.

Finally, let us try to find peace in our own lives, within our family and communities and become peacemakers ourselves.
