This week has been a dramatic week wherein we have seen a second attack equivalent to that carried out earlier this year on London Bridge. This being the third attack in the UK in three months. The outcome has been one of great travesty in the face of democracy and the value of human life.
In the middle of this plight was also a general election that was called by the Prime Minister Theresa May, wherein she saw the need to bring Britain to the arena of an election to solidify the Conservative party position for the Brexit deals.
The Conservative party, it is believed, made very little effort in the run-up to the general election as they anticipated the public’s main concern was that of Brexit. They anticipated that the election would nearly be a complete annihilation of the Labour Party as figures had shown the Labour Party lacked the poise, relevance, and leadership required to be of any threat to the Conservatives leadership and authority.
The concerns of the public did not simply comprise of Brexit, but of relevant importance was also the issues relating to safety and student fees that were at a crippling high. In response to this, a record level of young people registered to vote as a new generation of voters who were politically are and astute who had a point and a right to vote that enabled and equipped them to have a voice and one that would be heard.
Juxtapose this with the current acts of terrorism, it could be argued that the terrorists’ actions were their voices or their opinion, yet in a violent manner. Peace begets peace and violence begets violence. The road to democracy and freedom of speech cannot be arrived at merely by imposing one’s own personal view or opinion and equally the opinions of others cannot be taken for granted as also our position in life.
Dr Martin Luther King said, “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.”
Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.” John 14:27
This week, let us begin/continue to pray for one another, for love, for safety, for peace; but let us also pray for those with evil intent that their actions may be thwarted and their hearts turned towards good.
