Fighting a Battle You Can’t Lose

Pastor Pastor's Thought

As Brexit draws ever closer, the need for the UK to arrive at a deal is within the country’s best interest. Nonetheless,  British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Friday that “Brexit talks with the European Union had hit an impasse”.
The challenges to May’s leadership and negotiation tactics have been on both sides of the fence and in all directions. It was reported that at a summit in Austria on Thursday, EU leaders rejected May’s plan, regarding the UK border with Ireland.
In place of support there was an attack by the British media who instead defined her proposals as being in tatters which May indigently responded saying later in a televised announcement from Downing Street that “neither side should expect the impossible from the other”.
May continued in her response that the UK’s respect for the EU needed mutual respect in turn as she felt the respect she expected and extended was not reciprocated.
To compound the challenges for May, the unresolved Brexit negotiations continues to impact the Sterling, falling down by around 1.5 percent which placed on course for its biggest one-day drop this year, as fear continues over Britain leaving the EU without any deal. Both the EU leaders and the UK government issued warnings that they are planning for a no-deal scenario.
With the Irish border being one of the issues on the negotiation table, May said. “So we now need to hear from the EU what the real issues are, what their alternative is, so that we can discuss them. Until we do, we cannot make progress.”
In response to May’s comment, Donald Tusk The Brussels, European Council President was convinced that the European Union and Britain could still find a compromise.
May has suffered from the barrage of criticism with many voicing opposition to her plans, which they said would bind Britain into much EU regulation in return for free trade, and some would prefer a no-deal “hard Brexit” in March, despite warnings that would ravage the British economy.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said, “Theresa May’s Brexit negotiating strategy has been a disaster.” He continued stating that, “The Tories have spent more time arguing among themselves than negotiating with the EU.”
Whilst some in the various political corners have suggested a possible revoke on the EU exit, May has stated that, “The referendum was the largest democratic exercise this country has ever undergone,” and has ruled out a second vote to the decision as this she claims would “ deny its legitimacy or frustrate its result threatens public trust in our democracy.”
In this, what may seemly appear to be a losing battle, ironically a quote from US President Donald Trump would seem ironic as he states that “Sometimes, by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war.”
Let us spend time in prayer for our government, our Prime Minister and her Cabinet. Pray that God may give them direction and they will obey, that we may have peace.  Read Jeremiah 29:7. When God heads the battle, we cannot lose.Â
