God Bless Her

Pastor Pastor's Thought

This week 100 years ago following many years of bitter turmoil and struggles, the first section of women in British society were given the opportunity to vote.  For years The Suffragette Movement fought against the system, against men and specifically against politicians who were men only, fighting for equal rights for women.
Even when women were given the right to vote, it was an unequal offer to that given to men, with the prerequisites that women needed to be property owners, graduates and be at least aged 30 years, whereas men needed to be aged 21 years.
Still, it was not until 1997 under the leadership of Tony Blair that Britain was to see a significant increase in the numbers of women as Members of Parliament. For the first time, the number of women MPs broke through the 100 barrier, reaching 120 – 102 of whom represented the Labour party.
Interestingly, women in the Bible played quite significant roles, against the backdrop of a very male-dominated society and bring enveloped in patriarchal systems.  While women may not have held high positions in society, the roles they played placed them in positions of great influence and power.
Jesus held women in high regard, and in so doing He broke with tradition and with Jewish customs of His day.  He allowed women to travel with Him – Luke 8:1-3, He spoke with them – John 4:4-30, He even taught them – Luke 10:38-42.
In Proverbs, we read of the success of wise women…
“The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down”.  Proverbs 14.1
The success of our women rests in both her wisdom as well as the opportunities afforded her.
Let us pray for and celebrate our women; encouraging them to step forward, utilising the godly-wisdom they have been blessed with by God.
