Power

Pastor Pastor's Thought

Over the last two weeks, it has emerged that the Hollywood tycoon Harvey Weinstein, over decades, allegedly sexually harassed, intimidated and in two instances raped women within the Hollywood industry. His victims ranged from A class household names actresses, through to lesser known up and coming actresses. His position in Hollywood made him a name to be reckoned with, which he exploited, seeing himself somewhat as a demi-god.
His victims were silent in fear of reprisals or being ostracized and never being able to work in Hollywood again. Consequently, his position, authority, and power allowed him to exploit his victims and manipulate his authority.
Even though there were some women who were able to make claims and settlement against Weinstein, the full magnitude and severity of his actions remained somewhat silent. It was only after some brave victims broke their silence reporting Weinstein’s abusive actions, that Hollywood, the authorities and the media and even Weinstein began to take this seriously. He later responded that he was a product of coming to age as a 1950s /1960s child.
It is interesting to note the saying that ‘power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely’ – John Dalberg-Acton.
Jesus demonstrated a different kind of power, not a power of exploitation or segregation but one of liberation and empowerment to others. Matthew 28:18 Jesus said, ‘all power is given unto me in Heaven and on Earth, go ye therefore…’
This week pray that we all remain humble in all we do, thoughtful in all our actions and kind in all our deeds, to the glory of God.
