Friday 20 January 2017 saw the inauguration of America’s 45th President Donald John Trump, a billionaire businessman. Trump has been controversial from the outset. Whilst he did not win the popular vote, he won the college vote unanimously, much to the joy of his supporters and the disappointment of his opponents.
The phrase that Trump has coined, which is synonymous with his Presidency, he assured America with coin phrased promised that he would make America ‘great’. Interestingly, America has never been known as ‘great’. The closest definition we get to ‘great’ was Great Britain through its colonization of various countries throughout the world.
Trumps idea of his policy was to firstly, obliterate the legacy of his predecessor Barack Obama and building a brick wall between American and Mexico and obliterate all forms of Islamic extremists from the face of the earth.
Trump’s goals and expectation are grand and optimistic and the impact is global and supersedes merely American policies, which affect and impact countries around the world.
Within 24 hours, at Presidents Trumps inauguration, mass protests have occurred, not only in America but in other countries, protesting his presidency which has already been steeped in slander and controversy.
His family’s association and affiliation with the Ku Klux Klan has not been denounced or disassociated and his controversial, misogynistic ideas that many have claimed he has towards women, he has failed to avoid the stigma attached to this. Notwithstanding, his reference to God and his belief that America should return to Christian values, has won him the support of many Christian supporters and organisations, which has left the country divided.
“Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skilful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” – Harry S. Truman
[Pray] for kings and all that are in high place; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and gravity. ~ 1 Timothy 2:2
Regardless of our views or opinions of Donald Trump, we have one single responsibility, that is to pray for our leaders. Whilst Donald Trump is not the leader of Britain, he’s the leader of the world’s biggest democracy. So, like him or loath him, he needs our prayers. Let’s pray that God will give him wisdom and our leaders wisdom too, as we pursue a world that is governed and guided by the Holy Spirit.
