This week has been one of the most extraordinary weeks on the political front for some time. What started as the easiest of wins for American Politician Secretary of State Senator Hillary Clinton, Americans were shocked to learn that American entrepreneur and billionaire Donald Trump was to become President elect and the first President to never have held a political office in any capacity. What makes this unique, was this is the first time that a populist had won the vote by an extraordinary margin with promises that ranged from outlandish to revolutionary.
Upon his appointment to office, there was tension and fraction between various groups of racial, social, cultural, gender and political divides, wherein some even feared that the could be a threat of war. In the same week, when on the 11th of the 11, Amnesty Day, when we remembered those who had fallen for peace, so as to bring an end to war, we find ourselves between two arenas, an uncertain as to the directions we should take concerning the future, not just of Western democracy, but the impact it will have globally.
When the Bible says, ‘we should pray for our leaders’, this is a point that has become ever more so urgent in this time of unrest, uncertainty and fearmongering, amongst our media and politicians.
As we remember those who gave their lives in the name, and for the sake of peace, we must seek to maintain the dignity of the sacrifice for our liberty and, as a result endeavour to seek direction from God that is holy and peaceful for all nations.
The great evangelist of our time, Billy Graham is quoted as saying, “It is a great privilege, as well as our responsibility, to pray for our government leaders”.
Paul in one of his letters to Timothy wrote: “1 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior…” -1 Timothy 2:1-3.
Let’s join in prayer for President Elect Donald Trump, Prime Minister Theresa May and all other world leaders that peace and wisdom may prevail. Let us also remember to continue to pray for each other.
